Jesus Take the Wheel

We spoke to God in the driver seat

every day an everyday rebuke of
go out and get you some

Jesus take the wheel —
I’m attempting to stretch my feeble limbs
from conception to discharge

And I’d liked to have stretched
were it not for the steel frame rollover
rattle cage of sunburnt tupelo

Go out and get you some
next time you’re passing through Toledo
next time you’re talking to

Listen, brother, string a line of
citronella cowchip moonsets over there
Jesus take the wheel,

and I will talk to God as I drive
through that wilderness
you’ll see me talkin up a storm
all over your sunsets
