Cowboy Poetry

The newly elected president
from Arkansas looked at David Koresh
and said “where I come from
that’s called child abuse”

Ain’t no more cane on the Brazos
it all been done ground to molasses

and like a good wager raised
again reminded that to wander off
in deserts you will entice the rage
of something bigger and older

For it’s your misfortune and none of my own

and crueler than Texas. Texans
do die, they don’t just swing one leg
over the horizon and trot away;
least not where I come from.

Come shake your hand
tell your father goodbye.
